APETHORPE SOUTHWICK ROAD (WOODNEWTON) TL09SW 8/25 Halefield Lodge

  • II House. C17 and C19. Squared coursed limestone with thatch roof. Originally 3-unit plan. Single-storey with attic. 4-window range has 2 horizontal sliding sash windows, with glazing bars, to left, and 2 C20 windows, to right; all under wood lintels. 2 plank doors, also under wood lintels, between window ranges; one has C20 porch. 2 eyebrow dormers, with horizontal sliding sash windows similar to ground floor. Ashlar gable parapets and rebuilt stone stacks. C19 lean-to extension to rear. Interior not inspected but noted as having remains of open fireplaces. Probably converted into 2 dwellings C19 by Apethorpe Hall estate. The name Halefield is derived from the deserted medieval village of Hale.
