Description

The Rectory is a mid-18th century mill house, likely designed by Edward Applegarth, which has been converted into a rectory. It has been extended in the 20th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and features an attic. The main façade consists of three windows, with a central six-panel part-glazed door that has a rectangular fanlight with glazing bars and a plain ashlar surround. There is an early 19th-century flat-roofed porch supported by pillars. The windows are six-paned sashes with ashlar surrounds and keyblocks. The building also has ashlar quoins, a raised band between the floors and below the eaves, and three gabled roof dormers with sash windows. The gables have ashlar parapets and there are ashlar end stacks. To the left, there is a single-storey extension from the 20th century that is set back. The rear elevation features a catslide roof with dormer windows, a central doorway, and casement windows with wooden lintels. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported that the staircase includes shaped tread brackets and a Chinese fret balustrade, which is now boxed in. The room to the left of the entrance has plain panelling, while the room to the right has a blocked external door in the side wall that once provided access to the adjacent Apethorpe Mill, now known as the Parish Hall.
