Description

Kings Cliffe Mill, now known as the parish hall, is a watermill built around 1815, with later 19th-century alterations. It features squared coursed limestone and a Collyweston slate roof, with a T-shaped plan and stands two to three storeys high. The main front has a three-window range at the second floor, consisting of cast-iron casement windows with glazing bars, set under gauged stone heads with keyblocks. A stable door on the ground floor to the right has a similar stone head, and there is another doorway to the far right that originally provided access to the wheel house. The first-floor window to the left has a 20th-century casement but was originally a door. The right-hand corner of the building is chamfered at both the ground and first floors. A mill race runs under the left side of the mill, featuring a shallow arch-head with a parapet above. The rear wing, which was used as a granary, is now truncated and stands two storeys high. There is also a single-storey range attached to the right of the main front, which is now part of the parish hall accommodation. Although the interior was not inspected, it may still contain remnants of the water wheel. A mill was recorded at this location as early as 1650.
