Description

Harborough Hill House, along with its attached stables and coach house, is a house dating from 1858. It is constructed from squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and features a Collyweston slate roof. The building has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. The entrance front has a three-window range of 19th-century casements, including a similar window in the center, all set under gauged stone heads with keyblocks. A central gabled porch features an arch-headed opening with a panelled door. The house has a pair of gables with arch-headed attic windows, and a semi-circular merlon with a ball finial between them, which were likely reset from Kirby Hall. The ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, along with stone stacks rising from the central valley, add to its architectural detail. The datestone is located in the porch. The garden front to the left mirrors the entrance front with a similar three-window range, but includes a central blank arch at the ground floor, flanked by rusticated pilasters and spandrels, topped with a moulded cornice. The arms of the Earls of Winchelsea are displayed in the upper part of this arch. This feature, along with the merlon on the entrance front, were probably also reset from Kirby Hall. There is a 20th-century extension to the left. The former stables and coach house are attached to the extreme right of the front. Inside, there are some six-panelled doors and panelled window reveals. The house was built as the agents' house for the Kirby Hall estate.
