Description

The estate includes late 17th and early 18th century walls, gate piers, gates, screens, a banqueting house, balustrade, a statue, and a cistern, constructed for the second Earl of Peterborough, the Duchess of Norfolk, and Sir John Germain. The walls are built of squared coursed limestone and enclose the south-east garden of Drayton House. A central ashlar gate arch is in the west wall, featuring rusticated surrounds, quoins, and a triangular pediment with flanking niches. The fine wrought iron gates are likely by Jean Tijou, displaying the monogram of the Duchess of Norfolk and Sir John Germain. A wrought iron screen in the south-west corner of the south wall has rusticated ashlar piers topped with lead urns, possibly by Van Nost. A similar screen with gates and piers in the south-east corner incorporates the date 1699 and flatwork decoration, attributed to a local blacksmith. The banqueting house, linked to the north-east of the east wall by wrought iron gates and screen, is in a single-story L-shape with a two-window range. It has tall sash windows with glazing bars, moulded stone architraves, rusticated quoins, a moulded cornice, and a plain ashlar parapet. A section of wall and an ancillary building are attached to the rear. A lead cistern dated 1718 and a lead statue of a dog are attached to the front elevation. Five bays of ashlar balustrade, with three closed lead urns likely by Van Nost, are attached to the north of the banqueting house. The walls enclose three sides of the south-east garden and one side of the south forecourt of Drayton House. The banqueting house is located approximately 80 metres east of the east front of Drayton House.
