Description

Ecton Grange is a house dating from the late 17th and early 18th century, built for John Baker. It is constructed of squared coursed lias stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The house is arranged in a T-shape plan, with two storeys and an attic. The front facade has a two-window range, featuring 19th-century casement windows set in original openings. The ground-floor windows are under gauged stone heads with a central shallow arch, and the first-floor windows are under wood lintels. There are two flat-roofed dormers with casements containing glazing bars. A moulded stone cornice runs along the top of the front, and the gable ends have ashlar parapets and kneelers. A brick stack is visible at one end of the house. An illegible plaque is positioned between the first-floor windows. The rear wing features some leaded casements at half-landing positions. A 20th-century porch and other extensions have been added to the front. Inside, the 18th-century dogleg staircase ascends around a small square well, incorporating square newels and turned balusters. The interior also has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
