Description

Ecton Post Office and Cooperative Shop, also known as Stone Cottage, is a building that dates back to 1752. It is constructed from lias ashlar and features a slate roof. Originally, it was likely a school room in the center, with houses attached on either side. The building stands two stories tall and has a total of seven window openings. The central three bays are taller than the flanking bays, featuring a central casement window with glazing bars and two blank windows on either side, all set beneath gauged stone arches.

On the ground floor, there is a shop window in its original opening, which includes a six-panelled door with glazed top lights to the right. To the left, there is a 19th-century brick lean-to. Nos. 3 and 7, which are attached to the left and right sides, each have a two-window range of casements. The casements in No. 3 are 20th-century leaded, while those in No. 7 have glazing bars, all under gauged stone arches. The entrances to Nos. 3 and 7 are located to the left and right, respectively, and are set under plain arches. The building features ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, with brick stacks at the ends.

No. 9, which is attached at a right angle to No. 7, has a two-window range of casements under wooden lintels and a 19th-century plank door to the left. The asbestos tile roof was raised in the early 20th century. Above the shop window, there is a tablet inscribed with "A school for poor children built by John Palmer 1752."
