Description

The property at 35 and 37 West Street comprises two dwellings, dating to the 17th century with alterations in the early 19th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a Collyweston slate roof. Originally, the building likely featured a three-unit plan with a cross wing. The façade presents an irregular three-window range. A five-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion window forms a canted bay to the far left, with the canted design extending to the first floor, where a 19th-century casement window is found under a slated roof. Other windows are 19th and 20th-century casements set under wood and stone lintels. A stone hood mould is positioned above the centre window. The 20th-century central door is surrounded by plain ashlar. A lean-to porch abuts the bay window on the far left and features a plank door under a wooden lintel. The bay to the left of centre projects slightly. Ashlar gable parapets are present on the cross wing on the far left. The gabled roof covering the remaining two bays is separate from the cross wing and has ashlar stacks at each end. An outbuilding attached to the right now forms part of the main house. The rear elevation features a gabled eaves dormer to the far right containing a two-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion window. A similar three-light stone mullion window is centrally placed, alongside a two-light window with chamfered mullions. A blocked 17th-century doorway, featuring a four-centred arch, is located to the right side. Several 20th-century windows are also present. Interior details were not inspected, but likely include open fireplaces, now blocked.
