Description

This town house, now divided into two dwellings, dates to 1778 with 19th-century additions. Its front façade is limestone ashlar, while the rear is of squared coursed ironstone, both under a slate roof. The building follows a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a three-window front. A central 19th-century doorway is set within an arched opening topped with a pediment, flanked by canted stone bay windows with 20th-century casement windows. Moulded stone cornices run above the first and second floors, and a flat string course sits between the ground and first floors. The structure features rusticated quoins, a moulded stone cornice, an ashlar parapet with a central datestone, and gabled ends with brick stacks. A mid-19th century single-storey extension to the right has a sash window with a moulded stone surround and a hipped roof with a large glazed rooflight. A stone window and several sash windows with glazing bars are found on the left-hand side elevation. The rear elevation, now known as Burford House, has three sash windows with glazing bars, along with ashlar gable parapets and kneelers. An 18th-century ironstone wall with 19th-century gatepiers and wrought-iron gates extends to the left of Burford House. The interior was not inspected, but The Poplars section is reported to contain a mid-19th-century staircase with quarter landings and a turned balustrade, and other rooms are said to have panelling.
