Description

The Cottage is a mid-18th century house located on the east side of Main Street, Wadenhoe. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a thatched roof and has an irregular T-shaped plan. The main front of the house has four bays, with a gabled cross wing projecting forward to the left of centre. The right-hand side of the front elevation features a two-window range with 19th-century casement windows under wooden lintels. Similar casement windows are found beneath eyebrow dormers in the attic. A central four-panel door, also with a wooden lintel, sits between the window range. Casement windows are also present in the return wall of the cross wing. A bay to the far right has been blocked up. The house has ashlar gable parapets with kneelers, and an ashlar stack with moulded cornices to the right gable. A brick stack is also visible on the ridge. A single-storey outbuilding attached to the far left now forms part of the main house. Internally, there are remnants of three open fireplaces with bressumers. Part of the building was briefly used as a public house.
