Description

The building is a market cross, likely dating from the mid-14th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and ironstone, featuring an ashlar shaft. The cross stands on an octagonal base of eight steps, leading to a square socket. This socket supports octagonal shafts decorated with ballflower ornament and remnants of a foliated capital. The shaft is notable for having been used as a standard for measuring land. In 1965, the entire structure was moved to the west, as part of a road improvement scheme. The cross is designated as an ancient monument.
