Description

The stables, located approximately 20 meters northeast of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Blatherwyke, date back to 1770 and were built for Doriatus O'Brien of Blatherwyke Hall. Constructed from limestone ashlar with a Collyweston slate roof, the building features a U-shaped plan around a courtyard and stands two stories tall. The courtyard elevation has five bays, with a central carriage arch that has a plain segmental head. To the left are two coach house doors, also with similar arch heads, and one similar opening to the right, which is now blocked. There is a doorway and a window with semi-circular heads at the far right. The first floor has a two-window range of square-head sash openings under gauged stone heads, with the right-hand window retaining its sash. The central three bays of this elevation project slightly forward. The flanking three-window ranges are similar to the main range, featuring central arch-head doorways, while the end elevation of the right range has similar window openings. A moulded stone cornice and hipped roof complete the design. Above the central carriage arch is a datestone with an armorial device, including an arm and sword. The rear elevation of the main range is blank, with a central carriage arch. One inner return wall of the carriage arch features timber framing with brick infill. The rear and side elevations have had 20th-century windows inserted, and there are various single-storey extensions on the side elevations. The stables were formerly associated with Blatherwyke Hall, which was demolished in 1948.
