Description
West Lodge is a lodge cottage built between 1900 and 1901 by W Huckvale for Charles Rothschild. It is constructed from coursed squared stone and features a hipped thatch roof that forms a verandah on two sides, along with a central stone stack that has moulded ashlar quadruple flues. The building is designed in a Vernacular Revival style and is a single storey with an attic.
To the left, there is a canted polygonal bay window with leaded stone mullioned and transomed windows. A part-glazed plank door is located within the verandah to the right. Above this door is a wide eyebrow dormer that features a similar canted four-light window and panels of stonework on either side. The right side and rear of the lodge also have similar windows and doors.
West Lodge is part of a significant group of model estate buildings in Ashton, which were constructed by Charles Rothschild after he acquired the estate. It is similar in style to East End Lodge.
