Description

This is a house, now divided into two dwellings, Vine Cottage and Thatchers Cottage. The origins of the building date to 1659, with further work in 1730. It was remodelled in the early 20th century for Charles Rothschild by W. Hackvale. The house is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a thatched roof. Originally a three-unit plan, it is a single-storey building with an attic. The front has a three-window range of early 20th century three-light stone mullion windows, with smaller windows in eyebrow dormers to the attic. There are 20th-century doors, one to the left and one to the right of the centre, set beneath artificial stone lintels. The building features ashlar gable parapets, ashlar ridge and end stacks with moulded cornices. A datestone inscribed 1730 is positioned above the doorway to Vine Cottage, with a moulded cornice; and a datestone inscribed 1650 is above a window on the left-hand side. A fire insurance plaque is located to the right of the doorway. A 19th-century wing at the rear was remodelled in the early 20th century. The interiors were not inspected, but Thatchers Cottage is noted to contain an open fireplace with a bressumer and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
