Description

Cannam House is a house built in the early 18th century and remodelled in the late 18th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a slate roof. The house has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high. The main front has a five-window arrangement. The central entrance features a six-panelled door with glazed toplights, an arch-headed fanlight with glazing bars, and a moulded stone surround with pilasters and an open pediment. The sash windows decrease in size on the first and second floors, and all retain glazing bars and stone lintels with flush keyblocks. A plain stone string course runs between the floors, topped by a moulded stone cornice and plain parapet. The shallow gabled roof has stone stacks at the ends. The rear of the house dates back to the early 18th century and has a lean-to roof. Attached to the main front are 19th-century cast iron railings with gates. Inside, the entrance hall contains a late 18th-century staircase with turned balusters, which has been partially restored. The rooms at the rear contain spine beams with run-out stops.
