Description
The Bury House is a country house that dates from the late 17th century, with additions from the mid 18th century and mid 19th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and ironstone, featuring ashlar facades and Swithland slate roofs. The building has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys tall. The main front has a five-window range, with two flanking bays that project forward. The central entrance features six-panel double doors framed by moulded stone architraves. The sash windows, which have glazing bars and moulded stone architraves, decrease in size on the second floor, with some of these windows being blind. The house has a plain eaves parapet and hipped roofs, along with brick and stone stacks at the ridge and ends.
To the left of the main front, there is an elevation that likely dates to the early 18th century, which includes 19th-century casements with glazing bars and a 19th-century lean-to porch. The garden front to the right mirrors the main front with a four-window range. The rear elevation features an early 18th-century gable made of banded ironstone and limestone, alongside a similar gabled staircase projection.
Inside, the house has a panelled hall that probably dates from the early 19th century, complete with a bolection moulded stone fireplace. There are 18th-century eight-panelled doors with bolection moulded surrounds and panelled window reveals. The drawing room contains a reset 18th-century marble fireplace with detailed columns. The late 17th-century staircase features turned balusters and a quarter-landing, while a mid-19th-century staircase surrounds an open well.
