Description

Number 4 and its attached studio and outbuildings is a house, shop, and reading room, likely dating from the early 18th century with significant remodelling in the early 19th century. The reading room was constructed in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of ironstone ashlar and squared coursed limestone, with a slate roof. Originally planned as a two-unit house, it was later converted to include a shop on the ground floor. It is three storeys high and features a two-window range of sash windows with glazing bars, set beneath stone lintels with keyblocks. A square bay shop window with glazing bars is located on the left side. The central panelled door has a removable upper panel. A chamfered plinth is present, and brick stacks are positioned at the ends of the building. A shutter box and panelled shutters are fitted to the shop window on the far left. An attached three-window range to the right served as a reading room, featuring sash windows with glazing bars and gauged stone heads at ground floor level. A carriage arch, with a segmental head, is situated to the left of centre. At the rear, a six-panel door with glazed top-lights and a fanlight with glazing bars is present. A single-unit cottage attached to the rear has been converted to outbuildings. The interior of the house's ground floor retains some 19th-century shop fittings, including an early 19th-century staircase with a stick balustrade and an open fireplace with a stone lintel and keyblock.
