Description

The Irchester War Memorial is a limestone structure set on a sandstone base, located in an elevated railed garden off High Street. It features a 5-meter tall, square-sectioned pillar topped with a capstone that has an out-sailing cornice, above which is a domed cap. At the very top, a small Latin cross is positioned.

The front face of the memorial displays a large slate panel inscribed with "OUR GLORIOUS DEAD," listing the names of 76 individuals who fell in service. Below this, the phrase "FOR EVER IN OUR THOUGHTS" is also inscribed. Beneath the main pillar, there is another slate panel that reads "WORLD WAR II. 1939 - 1945" along with the names of 17 individuals.

On the rear of the pillar, a slate panel commemorates the Irchester men who lost their lives in the Great War, stating, "ERECTED/ BY/ PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE IRCHESTER MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919." Additionally, a sloping stone panel at the base of the front commemorates nine villagers who were killed in an air raid on 20 May 1941.

Access to the memorial is via steps that are flanked by one-meter-high limestone walls. The surrounding sloping memorial garden, which is contemporary with the memorial, is enclosed by iron railings, and decorative gates provide access to the steps. Two modern flagpoles have been installed on either side of the memorial at the top of the garden.
