Description

Numbers 5 and 7, also known as Spring Cottage, is a house that has been converted into two dwellings. The datestone indicates it was built in 1728. The structure features squared coursed limestone and brick, which is now painted, topped with a 20th-century plain tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan and is two storeys high, with part of it having an attic.

The main front consists of two wings at right angles, with a two-window range on the right featuring 20th-century casements under wooden lintels, and a one-window range on the left with a casement that has glazing bars, also under a wooden lintel. There is a 20th-century door and lean-to porch at the intersection of the wings for No. 5, and a 19th-century door located at the center of the left wing. The front of the right wing was rebuilt in brick in the late 18th or early 19th century. A gabled roof dormer with a leaded casement is present, along with ashlar gable parapets and brick stacks at the ridge and ends. The gable at the end of the left wing features two casement windows with glazing bars under wooden lintels and a datestone in the apex.

Inside No. 5, there is an open fireplace with a bressumer in the room to the right, and a similar fireplace in the first-floor room above. A winder stair to the right of the fireplace leads up to the attic. The ceiling beams are chamfered, and the roof structure includes butt purlins. In No. 7, there are spine beams. The house was built for the Stanton family, and originally No. 7 was an attached barn and dairy.
