Description

54 West Street is a house with a datestone indicating it was built in 1702, although it mainly reflects early 19th-century architecture. The building features squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and a Collyweston slate roof, arranged in an L-shape. It has two storeys with an attic and three storeys overall. The main front, dating from the early 19th century, has a three-window range on the second floor and a two-window range on both the ground and first floors. The central entrance consists of a six-panel door with a plain rectangular fanlight, stone lintel with a keyblock, and ashlar dressings. The eight-panel, unhorned sash windows have similar surrounds, with the windows reducing in size on the second floor. There are stone stacks at both ends of the building. To the left, there is a single bay that is likely from the late 18th century, also two storeys with an attic. A central carriage arch with double doors is located to the right, featuring a wood lintel and a plank door under a shallow stone arch. There is a 19th-century casement window under a wood lintel on the first floor, and hipped eaves dormers with leaded casements in the attic. A truncated stone stack is present at the ridge. The rear wing, probably from the 18th century, may have originally been a separate one-unit dwelling. Inside, a room in the rear wing retains the remains of an open fireplace with a bressumer.
