Description
The Baptist Church in Burton Latimer was built in 1744 and has undergone several extensions and alterations in 1832, 1878, 1889, and 1921. The church is constructed of squared ironstone and coursed ironstone, with a brick rear gable end and an addition. It features a Collyweston stone slate roof with coped gables and a brick lateral stack on the left side. The gabled end facing the street has two blocked doorways with stone lintels and keystones, along with a central 19th-century Gothic style arched doorway that includes a square hood mould, 19th-century double board doors, and iron gates. There are also two bootscrapers and two windows with stone lintels and keystones, which contain paired 19th-century ovolo-moulded stone arched lights and a transom. The flanks of the church have moulded eaves and two bays with two tiers of similar windows. A one-bay addition in stone features similar windows but with gauged stone heads, and there is a later 19th-century brick addition at the rear. Inside, the church has a gallery on three sides, which has been extended to four sides, supported by slender cast-iron columns. The interior also includes 19th-century pews and a heavy late 19th-century classical frame for the organ. A datestone from 1832 is preserved in the lobby.
