Description

Number 28 is a house located on West Street in Kings Cliffe, built in 1845 for William Cunnington, as indicated by the datestone. The structure is made of squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. It has a two-unit plan with lean-to additions and stands three storeys high, including cellars. The facade includes a three-window range with a central six-panelled door that has a rectangular fanlight above. This door is framed by a moulded stone eared surround and a flat-stone hood supported by brackets. The windows are six-paned, unhorned sash types with moulded stone eared architraves and plain aprons beneath the ground floor and first floor windows. The second floor windows are reduced in size. A horizontally chanelled ashlar plinth features two boarded cellar windows, while rusticated quoins and a raised band separate the ground and first floors. The house has ashlar end stacks, one of which includes the datestone. A flight of steps leads to the front door, flanked by horizontally chanelled ashlar side walls. To the left, there is a lean-to extension with a 19th-century casement window beneath a wooden lintel. The rear elevation has 19th-century casement windows and an arched stair window. Inside, the hall features a staircase with a stick balustrade that rises around a narrow open well. William Cunnington was known locally as a coal merchant, maltster, miller, and brewer.
