Description
The Old Churchyard revetment wall is a structure dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, although it has older origins and has undergone repairs in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed squared limestone and coursed limestone rubble, with some sections featuring red brick laid in English garden wall bond and topped with chamfered ironstone coping. The wall surrounds three sides of the churchyard, bordering Mill Lane to the east, Manor Street and Church Street to the north, and Hunter Street to the west. There are gateways at the south end of Church Street near the northeast corner and at the southwest corner, both located at either end of a path that crosses the churchyard diagonally. The wall's height varies; it is highest on the west side, where the level of Hunter Street is nearly 2 meters below that of the churchyard, and lowest at the northeast corner, where the streets are only slightly below the level of the churchyard. The red brick is found in the southern section of the wall alongside Mill Lane.
