Description

The School House is a house dating from the 16th century, altered around 1860-1870, possibly by George Devey, in a picturesque style. It features a timber frame with thin brick infill, roughcast and rendered on the south and east sides. The west gable has a ground floor made of coursed rubble stone and an external rubble stone chimney stack with two 19th-century diagonal brick shafts. There is a rebuilt brick chimney with 'V' pilasters to the right. The roof is covered with old tiles.

The building has two storeys, with the upper floor jettied to the south and east, featuring a 19th-century moulded fascia board that masks the bressumer and a 19th-century moulded wooden cornice below the eaves. It has two bays, with late 19th-century diamond leaded casements: a three-light window on the ground floor left and first floor, and a four-light window on the ground floor right, with transoms on the lower windows. The first floor projects to the east over an entrance loggia supported by timber posts, and has a two-light casement to the south and a canted oriel window to the east. The door below in the east end is flush-panelled with top lights.

Inside, the ground floor fireplace at the east end features a moulded stone four-centred arch with moulded spandrels, and there is a moulded spine beam.
