Description
Fort End House is a house and service wing, now divided into two homes. It dates from the 17th century and was altered and enlarged in the 18th century, with a conversion in the 20th century. The rear features timber-framing, while the rest is mainly constructed of witchert and roughcast. The right wing has a stone front with brick dressings and a brick gable above a band course. To the left is a former outbuilding, now called Byre House, which has some witchert but is mostly built with 20th-century walls and old tile roofs. The main house has a tiled right wing and a slated central range.
It is two storeys high with three bays, including a two-storey plus attic projecting gabled right wing. The central part features a six-panel door in a small porch supported by posts. The outer bays have sash windows, with a smaller window above the door. The right wing has a slightly higher ridge and features a two-light ground floor casement, as well as sash windows on the first floor and in the gable. At the rear, there is timber framing with brick infill. The stacks flank the central range.
Inside the right wing, there are chamfered and stopped spine beams. The former outbuilding, now Byre House, was converted into a residence in the mid-1980s and features a pair of dormers and 20th-century windows in the tile roofs. The roof structure includes four heavy tie-beams, one of which has been cut to accommodate a first-floor partition. There are also redundant mortises in the tie-beam and some joists that partially support the domestic first floor. The roof features curved principal trusses and queen strut trusses, with common rafters and purlins clasped to collars. The 20th-century work is not of interest.
