Description
Blackwell Farmhouse is a 15th-century hall and crosswing house located in Latimer. It is constructed with a timber frame and brick infill, topped with an old tile roof. The building originally featured an open hall of two bays, with a 16th-century inserted floor and a stack backing onto a cross-passage. The two-storey crosswings have upper floors that jet out to the west. The west front displays close studding with concealed braces, while the sides and rear have panel framing. There is a cross passage at the right end of the hall, which includes an original moulded jambed doorway with a four-centred arched head and sunk spandrels. The windows are fitted with lattice leaded casements, and there are later additions at the rear.
Inside, the ceilings of the crosswings feature large exposed joists and beams. The hall truss includes moulded purlins and wall plates, with chamfered wind braces. There is an arch-braced tie beam with queen struts leading to the collar, all of which are moulded. The moulded capitals have wall shafts. The crosswings have similar roofs, but they are unmoulded. Several doorways retain their original moulded frames and four-centred heads with sunk spandrels. A 17th-century staircase is located in a small framed addition at the junction of the right-hand crosswing and the hall.
