Description
Bourton Villa is an early 19th century house, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is likely built over a brick core and has a rendered exterior, a hipped slate roof, and rendered stacks. The house is arranged in an L-shape. The main front, which faces the garden, has a three-window arrangement over three storeys. The central entrance features a six-panel door with an overlight, set on a wide stone step. This door and its bracketed hood likely replaced an earlier porch, the remains of which are marked by column positions on the step. Flanking the door are three segmental bay windows on each floor. The ground and first floors have curved 16-pane sashes, while the second floor has similar 12-pane sashes. The bay windows are flanked by giant pilasters, fluted from the first-floor level upwards, with egg-and-dart decoration to the capitals. There are blank windows above the door on the first and second floors. Other features include a plinth, cellar windows to the bays, horizontal bands marking the first and second floors, and deep overhanging eaves with a moulded cornice underneath. The left side elevation has three bays with 12-pane sashes to the ground and first floors, and 9-pane sashes to the second floor. A stair projection is located at the rear, in the angle between the front and the left wing. Inside, a confined open-well staircase rises in tight curves connecting the cellar to the attic; it features a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail and stick balusters. The drawing room has a moulded plaster cornice and original pelmet boxes.
