Description

Nos 5A and 5B on Bourton Road is a house that was formerly two cottages. It dates from the mid-18th century, with possible older origins, and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features coursed squared limestone and red brick, topped with a plain-tile roof from the 20th century, along with brick ridge and end stacks.

The house has a two-storey, four-window range with two two-unit plans. The roadside elevation includes a 20th-century door to the right of the center, which has a wooden lintel. To the right of this door is a 19th-century bay window with paired sash windows at the front and narrow sashes on the sides. The ground floor has twelve-pane sashes, while the first floor features both twelve- and sixteen-pane sashes, all with wooden lintels. The portion to the left of the center was once a separate cottage, with its entrance facing a yard at the rear. This side has a front and end wall made of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring a central nine-panel door with a reeded wood surround, a panelled overdoor, and a straight hood on shaped brackets. The door is flanked by canted bay windows, and above it is a blank window on the first floor, flanked by twelve-pane sashes with wooden lintels. The other half of the building is rendered at the rear and has a mix of sash and casement windows, along with small square windows on the ground and first floors. Each half of the house has a flat-roofed dormer at the rear.

The interior is noted for having spine beams.
