Description

Flag House is a 17th-century building, significantly altered in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is located on the south-east side of the High Street in Chalfont St Giles and has an L-shaped plan. The building is primarily red brick, originally covering a timber frame, although the timber frame is visible in the gable end facing the street. The roof is tiled, with brick bands delineating the storeys. A small attic window is set into the framing, and there are 2-light, camber-arched casement windows on the ground floor, dating to the 19th century. The west side has 2-light casements on both floors. A plain door provides access to the front. A single-storey wing, added in the early 19th century at a right angle to the west side, contains a 3-light wood casement and a plain door under a common lintel. A weather-boarded lean-to, with an old tile roof and set on a brick base, extends from the east side. An external brick chimney stack is located at the rear. Internally, exposed studding is visible on the former west external wall. Upstairs, there is a chamfered wall plate. The attic rafters are largely encased, but two purlins and a collar are exposed. Parts of a partition wall are also visible.
