Description

The Parish Church of St Giles, located on the south-east side of High Street in Chalfont St Giles, dates back to the 13th century with its chancel and north aisle. The south aisle and the west bay of the north aisle were added in the 14th century, while the 15th century saw the widening and lengthening of the north aisle, as well as the rebuilding of the chancel arch and south arcade. The clerestory and tower were also constructed in the 15th century. A north vestry was added between 1861 and 1863, and the church underwent restoration. The south porch and organ chamber were added in the later 19th century.

Architecturally, the church features a chancel, a three-bay aisled nave, and a west tower, built from flint with stone dressings and topped with lead roofs. Notable features include a 13th-century double piscina on a detached shaft, octagonal piers in the nave arcades, and double-chamber arches. The battlemented tower has two stages, and the nave roof, dating from the 15th century, is adorned with moulded beams. Inside, there is a 13th-century Perbeck Marble font, several poppy head bench ends from the 15th and 16th centuries, and a communion rail from around 1700.

The church also contains wall paintings from the 15th century above the chancel arch and from the 14th century in the south aisle, along with several brasses and monuments. Noteworthy is the tomb chest of Sir George Fleetwoode, who died in 1620, and a wall monument to Sir Hugh Palliser, who died in 1796, featuring an urn in front of a steep pyramid.
