Description

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist was built between 1867 and 1869 by Augustus Frere. In 1910, E.H. Fellowes Poynne added a vestry, aisles, and a baptistry at the west end, along with internal alterations. The church is constructed of red brick with stone dressings, featuring sill and abacus bands, and has tiled roofs. It includes a 2-bay chancel and a 4-bay nave, with the east two bays being aisled. The design is in the Early English Gothic style, characterized by lancet windows, including a three-light east window, and cusping on the lancets and windows from the 1910 work. The exterior has stepped buttresses, coped gables with crosses at the apexes, and a bellcote at the west end. A foundation stone on the north wall of the chancel is inscribed "relaid by Emma Louise Liberty on Enlargement of Church 14th October 1910."

Inside, the church features colour-washed render, stone dressings, arches, and piers. There are depressed arches leading into the transepts, and the chancel roof is panelled with ribs and bosses. The nave has arches of two chamfered orders leading into the aisles, which have three-light windows. The chancel arch consists of two orders with moulded capitals on cobels. The nave also has a braced and ashlared collar rafter roof.
