Description
The retaining walls of the War Memorial Garden in Taplow were constructed around 1902. This oval Italian garden is set into a slope and features tufa rock walls on the east side, south end, and at the north, where it is built into a tall alcove. The entry path at the northwest has tufa rock walls, while the west side includes a Roman marble screen wall with a lattice pattern, supported by four herm-type uprights topped with head finials. On the east side, there is a large bronze statue of a woman by Sir B Mackennal, positioned above an elegant classical Roman marble panel. The north alcove houses a Venetian wellhead dated 1561, which includes a bronze plaque commemorating the garden's conversion into a memorial for the First World War.
