Description

The terrace wall to the garden front at Cliveden dates from the 17th and 19th centuries. It is a very high terrace, likely constructed around 1677 by William Winde, with later alterations. The wall is made of red brick and features a balustrade with a cornice and a central piece made of stone and cement. There are double flights of stairs on each side of a rusticated stone archway that has a carved keystone. This central piece was modified by Barry around 1851 and partially refaced in stone around 1900.

On each side of the central archway, there are nine high blank arches made of red brick, each with stone imposts and keystones. The outer ends, possibly added by Leoni around 1730, consist of three arches made of deeply rusticated red brick, featuring voussoirs and channelled piers, along with stone imposts and keystones. Above this, there is a full entablature with a pulvinated frieze. The central archway and the central arches of the end sections are filled with fine late 19th-century iron gates made by Singer of Frome. Behind the central gates, there is a chamber that contains a marble statue of Venus and an elaborate marble fireplace with an overmantel.
