Description
The stable and schoolroom, built around 1720 and altered since, is located to the north-west of The Friends' Meeting House in Sedbergh. It features roughly coursed rubble and graduated green slate roofs, with a rectangular plan that includes a low single-storey stable and a two-storey section on the left housing the schoolroom on the first floor. The stable has a large central entrance flanked by small rectangular one-light windows, and two small-paned windows in the right gable wall. The two-storey portion has a ground floor doorway with a concrete lintel and a flight of stone steps leading up to the schoolroom, which has a plain plank door, two one-light windows in the left gable wall, a stone-slate course above these windows, and a gable chimney. Inside, the stable features a two-bay roof with a collar truss and butt purlins, with some reused timbers, while the schoolroom is simply finished with a small fireplace and an exposed roof. This building is significant for its group value with The Friends' Meeting House located approximately 40 meters to the south-east.
