SD69SW ABBOT HOLME 162-1/5/271 Abbot Holme House (east), and 14/06/84 attached barn (Formerly Listed as: CATHOLES, Dentdale Abbot Holme House)

GV II

Farmhouse with attached cart-shed and barn. Probably mid C18; altered. Roughly-coursed mixed rubble with quoins (house white-washed), slate roofs except lower half of both front and rear slopes of house which are stone slate. Double-depth double-fronted house facing south, with barn linked to east gable wall and canted back. EXTERIOR: the house is 2 storeys and 2 windows, almost symmetrical, with a square-headed doorway in the centre, a square window to the left and a smaller rectangular window to the right (both with altered glazing) and 2 small 4-pane sashes above (both with exposed boxes). Gable chimneys. Right-hand end of front wall continues to right, forming front wall of cart shed which links it to the barn. Rear has one course of through-stones, a doorway offset right, a stair-window above and to the left of this, a 2-light chamfered mullion window to the left, and 2 windows at 1st floor with altered glazing. The barn is approx. 5 metres east of the house and canted back, the angle between the 2 gable walls formed by a cart shed which has a wagon doorway with re-used timber lintel and harr-hung doors, and the eaves sloped down from house to barn. The barn, of dry-jointed random rubble with large quoins and a slate roof, has very narrow slit breathers on 2 levels, a blocked doorway next to the left corner with a massive monolith lintel, and a lean-to porch offset right, with harr-hung doors. Outshut to rear. C19 roof trusses. Forms group with Abbot Holme Bridge to east (qv), and with Abbot Holme House (west) to west (qv).
