Description
Abbot Holme House (west) is a farmhouse with an attached stable to the west and a barn or cart-shed to the east. It likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of roughly-coursed mixed rubble with quoins, mostly white-washed, and features a graduated slate roof, with four courses of stone slate covering the stable. The house is oriented east-west, facing south, with the stable on the west side and the barn on the east.
The exterior of the house has a single-depth, two-unit plan and a rear outshut to the first bay. It stands two storeys tall and has three windows that are almost symmetrical. The front features a square-headed doorway that is offset to the left and protected by a simple stone-slab porch. To the left of the door is a square six-pane sash window, and above it, there is a four-pane sash window. There is also a similar four-pane sash window on each floor further to the right. A square chimney is located at the junction with the stable on the left, overlapping it, while there is a gable chimney on the right. The positioning of the windows suggests that there may have been a fire-window to the left of the porch in the past.
The stable continues to the left of the house and includes through-stones, a very small square window at ground level, and a segmental-headed doorway in the gable wall with rubble voussoirs. To the right of the house and slightly set back is a two-bay barn or cart-shed made of dry-jointed rubble, featuring a shallow segmental-arched wagon doorway with rubble voussoirs.
At the rear, there is a deep full-height outshut to the first bay of the house, topped with a catslide roof. A low lean-to loose-box is built in the angle with this outshut, and there is a flight of steps leading to the loft doorway of the stable. The interior has not been inspected. This building forms a group with Abbot Holme House (east) and Abbot Holme Bridge.
