Description
Hunters Stone is a guide stone that is probably medieval in origin. It is made of sandstone and stands approximately 2 metres high with an irregular square shape. A small cross is incised on one face of the stone. This monolith marks a remote section of an important early route that was used by monks and drovers traveling between Coverham Abbey and Kettlewell, as well as by hunters pursuing deer in the nearby forest. According to local legend, when the clock in Hunter's Hall, now known as Coverhead Farm, strikes twelve, the stone turns around.
