Description

Norton View Farm and Thackray Barn is a farmhouse and barn dating from the mid to late 17th century, with alterations from the mid 18th century and the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of slobbered rubble brought to course, with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The farmhouse originally had a lobby entry plan and faces away from the street.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has four bays. The central mid 18th century gabled cross-wing features a right-hand entrance with a moulded surround, a plank door, and a moulded dripstone. On the left side of the ground floor, there is a former cross window with a moulded surround, although the lower halves of both lights are now blocked. There are also four-pane casements and fixed lights. The two upper floor windows have moulded surrounds and sashes with glazing bars. A gable end ridge stack is present. To the left, there is a stable with a chamfered surround to the entrance and a basket arch lintel, as well as external steps leading to the hayloft with a chamfered surround. To the right, there is a blocked ground floor staircase window and an upper floor former two-light mullioned window, which now has a missing mullion and a 20th century casement. The right-hand gable end has a ridge stack to the right of the cross-wing and another to the left of the cross-wing.

The garden front consists of two builds, featuring one former three-light window and one former four-light window per storey, each with only one remaining mullion. The right-hand ground floor has a chamfered fire window. The right side of the farmhouse is a mid 18th century extension with an entrance that has a moulded surround and keyed lintel, along with cross windows on each storey. The interior is reputed to contain scarfed spine beams, which indicate the presence of a former timber firehood.

The barn, located to the right of the farmhouse, dates from the late 17th or early 18th century. It has a central wagon entrance with a chamfered surround and a segmental arch made up of nineteen voussoirs, along with plank doors. There is also a right-hand entrance with a chamfered surround.
