Description
Cogden Hall is a house built in the late 18th century for John, the son of Caleb Readshaw, who was the Lord of the Manor of East Grinton. The building is constructed of roughcast rubble and features hipped stone slate roofs. It stands two storeys high and is designed in a way that the main house and two lower projecting wings at the rear create three sides of a courtyard, with railings completing the fourth side.
The garden front faces north and is arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern, with the central section forming a three-window, five-sided canted bay that previously had a central doorway, which has since been replaced with a window. The openings are framed with ashlar surrounds that include keystones, and the windows are sash style with glazing bars. There are two ridge stacks on the roof.
At the rear of the main house, there are two first-floor sash windows with glazing bars and a tall landing window located centrally above a 20th-century projecting porch. The left wing features a Diocletian window above a 20th-century door, while the right wing has one bay of sash windows in stone surrounds and a 20th-century doorway. The return fronts of the main house also have one bay of windows similar to the garden front.
Inside, the drawing room located in the canted bay showcases an Adam style ceiling, frieze, and fireplace. The wings are connected by cast-iron railings with finial heads set on a round-topped plinth, featuring a central gate and laid out in a gently curving plan.
