Description

Grinton Lodge is a former shooting lodge, now functioning as a youth hostel, built around 1800 and significantly altered since its construction. It was commissioned by James Fenten. The building features pebble-dashed rubble and a stone slate roof, with structures of one, two, and three storeys arranged around a courtyard. The openings are framed with ashlar sandstone, showcasing classical and Gothick design elements, along with castellated rooflines.

The east front has two storeys, featuring a canted bay with three windows on each floor, followed by three first-floor windows that have round-headed openings and straight-headed sashes with glazing bars. To the right, there is a three-storey tower with stepped diagonal buttresses. The south elevation consists of two storeys with nine irregular first-floor windows. On the north side, there is a single-storey range with three two-light flat-faced mullion windows, each with lintels that have carved hood-moulds.

Access to the property is from the west through a carriage entrance that has a segmental-arched head. Inside the courtyard, directly opposite the carriage entrance, is the main baronial-style doorway set within a single-storey porch. The south range may have originally served as coach houses and stables. Inside, the common room features a canted bay with an Adam style fireplace. Grinton Lodge stands out as a prominent feature in the surrounding landscape.
