Description
The guide stone at the junction with Raikes Lane is a marker stone, probably dating from 1853. It is made of gritstone and stands approximately 50 centimetres high, deeply bedded into the ground, with a triangular section and a ridged top. The left face features the incised lettering "SKIPTON/THRESHFIELD" along with a painted pointing hand, while the right face has "HETTON" incised. Both faces are painted white with black details. The stone became significant after the Grassington to Skipton road saw increased traffic in the mid-19th century due to the expansion of the Skipton cattle and corn markets, and the Cracoe to Skipton section was realigned and turned into a turnpike in 1853.
