Description
The Post Office and adjoining barn in Dent is a pair of cottages that have been combined to serve as a post office and shop. Likely built in the 18th century, the structure has been altered over time. It features coursed rubble with quoins, painted white, and a stone slate roof. The building has a double-depth, two-unit plan with a rear wing on the left side, and the barn extends from the end of this wing.
The exterior consists of two low storeys and three windows, set on a plinth. The ground floor has two square-headed doorways in the center, both with board doors, although the left door is now fixed. To the left, there is a square four-pane sash window, and to the right, a rectangular two-light shop window, along with a letterbox next to it. On the first floor, there are three square sash windows with 12, 4, and 12 panes, respectively. A gable chimney is located on the left, featuring a stone slate band, while a ridge chimney on the right is coupled with that of The Wool Shop.
The left gable wall has a 12-pane sash window near the rear corner of the ground floor, a small one-light window above it, and a large rectangular window near the front corner of the first floor, which has been modified with double glazing to imitate a 16-pane sash. Above this, there is a small square attic window. The rear wing includes a doorway at the junction, a small window to the left of this, and a 12-pane sash window above.
The barn, constructed of unpainted roughly-coursed rubble with through-stones, is likely two bays and continues at the same height as the main building. It features a square-headed doorway at the junction with a stone lintel, a loading door above this, and a wagon doorway at the left end with a wooden lintel. The rear and interior of the barn were not inspected.
This building forms a group with The Wool Shop adjoining to the right and with Siege Ghyll to the southeast.
