Description

Souther Scales Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1765, with 19th and 20th-century alterations and late 17th-century origins. It is constructed of slobbered squared rubble with painted stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high and was formerly double fronted, with a right-hand bay added in the 19th century. The entrance is located left of centre within a gabled porch, featuring a plain surround and a plank door from around 1980. A datestone in the gable is inscribed with "M R: M: 1765" above a floral motif.

On the left side of the ground floor, there is a 3-light flat faced mullioned window, while the right side features a former 2-light window that was lowered around 1960, with the mullion removed to create a French window. There is also a single light window and an entrance added on the far right in the 1960s. The upper floor has former 2-light mullioned windows on the left and right of centre, with the mullions now missing, and a far right-hand window from the 1960s, along with 20th-century casements.

The left gable end has a corbelled ridge stack, with the base of a 17th-century stack still surviving, and a ridge stack located at the former right gable. The rear of the building includes a former 2-light chamfered mullioned window on the upper floor, with the mullion now missing. Inside, there are four upper floor four-panel doors and two ground-floor six-panel doors, some featuring H hinges.
