Description

West Gate Farmhouse, built in 1645, has a barn attached to its right. The farmhouse features pebble-dashed walls with gritstone dressings, while the barn is constructed from limestone rubble, both topped with graduated stone slate roofs. The house is two stories tall and has three first-floor windows. To the right, there is a half-glazed door set in a surround with chamfered jambs and a shallow triangular head. Above the door, there is a lintel with a recessed shield-shaped plaque that has raised lettering stating "1645". The windows are recessed, unevenly spaced fixed sashes with glazing bars, all framed in plain stone surrounds with slightly projecting sills. A large two-flue ridge stack is located between the left and center windows. The interior was not seen during the resurvey, but the window spacing suggests that the original 17th-century doorway was likely between the left and central bays, indicating a lobby entry plan typical of that period. The attached barn has three bays, with the central and right bays projecting and a catslide roof. It features central double board doors with strap hinges and quoined jambs, along with a wooden lintel at eaves level and a small square window to the right. The interior of the barn was also not inspected during the resurvey.
