Description

Lower Townend Farmhouse, Cottage and Attached Barn is a farmhouse, now divided into two dwellings, with an attached barn. The building dates to the 17th century, with a lintel inscribed with the date 1678. It is constructed of deeply coursed, squared gritstone and has a stone slate roof. The original plan comprised two rooms, with a single-aisled barn attached to the right, all under the same roof.

The farmhouse has two windows on the first floor. The ground floor features a 20th-century door to the right, set within a chamfered, quoined surround with a Tudor-arched lintel displaying the date. A more recent door has been inserted to the far left. Between the two doors is a three-light window to the left, and a former four-light window to the right, now lacking its central mullion. Two further three-light windows are located on the first floor. The building has moulded kneelers and chamfered gable copings on the left side. A central ashlar ridge stack with a band and cornice is prominent.

The barn has a large boarded cart entrance to the left and a door to the far right, with two casement windows on each floor. The interior of the barn showcases two braced arcade posts to the aisle. A later addition to the rear right of the house and a lean-to adjoining the end wall of the barn are not considered to be of particular architectural interest.
