Description
Thorpe St Andrew War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919, located at the junction of Chapel Lane and the Yarmouth Road (A1242), just east of the parish church by the River Yare in Thorpe St Andrew, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently placed between the river and the road. It features a rough-hewn decorative wheel-head cross atop a slightly tapering shaft, which stands on a four-sided tapering plinth with a single-stepped base.
The plinth is inscribed with names of those who served, while the Second World War names are commemorated on two bronze panels attached to a granite open 'book' set into the ground at the base of the memorial. The inscription on the plinth reads: "ERECTED IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE GALLANT SONS OF THIS VILLAGE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE," followed by the names of the fallen from each year of the war. The book contains the inscription for the Second World War: "1939 1945" followed by the names of those who served.
