Description
Irstead Old Hall is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the late 16th century, which underwent alterations in the late 18th century. It is constructed of brick and features a roof made of black glazed pantiles and corrugated tiles. The west facade is two storeys high and consists of five bays. To the right, there is a two-storey gabled porch with a round arched entrance. Below a pediment, there is a platband that supports a three-light mullioned window. The gable head is adorned with deep kneelers. The ground floor has four late 18th-century segmental-headed cross casements, which consist of three, four, or five lights, while the first floor features four similar four-light windows. The roof is bell-based and gabled, supporting four hipped dormers with casements. There is a south internal gable end stack, and the gable heads display tumbling. The east side, or rear, is marked by added outshuts with catslide or lean-to roofs, which feature two stepped external stacks that have been partly rebuilt and include triple octagonal flues topped with 19th-century star tops. The stacks are gabled back to the main roof.
