Description

The Church of St Michael is a parish church dating to the 14th century, with a west tower, nave, and continuous chancel; a 15th-century south nave aisle was added later. The church was restored in 1839 and more extensively in 1844. It is constructed of flint with ashlar quoins, and has thatched roofs, except for the lead-covered porch roof.

The unbuttressed three-stage tower has a string course below the belfry and a plinth course at its base. It features a two-light reticulated west window, cusped square ringing chamber ventilation panels, and two-light Y tracery belfry windows, all topped by a crenellated parapet. The nave and aisle have diagonal corner buttresses that are flat to the flanks. A two-story gabled south porch has a circular stair turret to the west, diagonal buttresses, and a moulded entrance arch below an ogeed and cusped statuary niche, surmounted by a parapet. Inside the porch is a wave-moulded inner doorway, leading to the original door with its lock. The porch is no longer floored. The porch has two-light reticulated side windows. The south aisle has a two-light square-headed window, and a three-light window to the east. The south chancel has two two-light reticulated windows and an arched priests' door, with diagonal eastern buttresses. A three-light renewed reticulated east window sits between brick kneelers on the east gable. One two-light reticulated north chancel window survives, another is now blocked, revealing a bulge where rood stairs once stood. Two Perpendicular windows are in the north nave, both of two lights, one square-headed and the other under a four-centred arch.

Inside, a tall double-chamfered tower arch leads to the tower. There are 12th-century rere arches to the north and south doors, the north one incorporating re-used chevron fragments. A three-bay 15th-century south arcade has lozenge piers, semi-circular responds, and plastered brick capitals, supporting double-chamfered arches. An aumbry is located in the south-east chapel. 16th-century nave benches remain, some adorned with poppy heads and animal armrests. The octagonal font dates to the late 14th century and showcases figurative and animal sculptures against its stem, alongside panels depicting a hand of God, a head of Christ, and other motifs. A 19th-century King post supports the nave roof, while the chancel has a coupled rafter roof with one tier of moulded purlins. The south aisle has a 19th-century rafter roof. Remaining wall paintings include a depiction of St Christopher on the north nave wall. A stiff-leaf bench end with a head from the mid-13th century is positioned against a 16th-century linenfold pulpit. A crested dado of screen features twelve apostles painted on four panels. Chancel stalls, dated 1663, are decorated with panelled and incised backs. A cinquefoiled piscina and a plain sedilia are also located in the chancel.
