Description
Pond Cottages is a terrace of three cottages located in Chawton, dating from the 16th and 18th centuries, with restoration from the 20th century. The cottages have brick walls constructed in Monk and Flemish Garden Wall bonds, with a section of exposed timber framing visible on the south side. The core of the building features a cruck-framed late-medieval hall, while the main structure reflects 18th-century design, showing variations in height and spacing.
The east front has one storey and an attic, with a total of six windows above seven. The roof is thatched, hipped on the south side and half-hipped on the north, featuring eyebrow dormers and a lower eaves line on the south side. The windows are casements, some with old leaded lights, and the doors are boarded within plain frames. At the north end, there is a 20th-century boarded outshot with a slate roof, and the gable above displays exposed 18th-century framing.
Inside No. 3, the cruck frame is visible, along with evidence of the insertion of fireplaces from the early 17th century on the upper floor, and timber-framed cross-walls.
