Description

The former Lewes Public Library, dating to around 1870, is a red brick building with a slate roof. The roof is steeply pitched and features pavilion-like gables at each end, topped with small cast-iron balustrades and weather-vane finials. A tall brick stack, incorporating stone detailing and projecting mouldings, rises from the centre of the ridge.

The front of the building has four windows, each with pointed arch surrounds and hood moulds above the casements, set within a horizontal band along the cill. A central stone porch with a flat-headed parapet, pierced with quatrefoil decoration, provides access. The central pointed archway of the porch has moulded imposts and panelled spandrels, leading to a hollow-chamfered arch over a double panelled door.
